Sounding It Out – 52 FREE Activity Cards

Greyson has been working really hard at sounding out his words. He has all of his constants down, but still mixes up some of his vowels. I have been using a lot of different methods/games and activities to help him practice sounding out his three and four letter words. We have been playing a lot of Boggle Jr and Scrabble Jr. The Boggle Jr has been the best game to help him with Sounding It Out. While he enjoys Scrabble Jr the most…

In addition to the board games we have been playing, he happily worked his way through these 52 Sounding It Out Activity Cards. Instead of just having him write the letters immediately. I had him use our letter tiles and place them on first. I then checked his work, and if it was right he wrote the letters in the squares.

Sound It Out - Greyson Working

As I said, he is still struggling with the correct vowels, so this was a great way to not only have him practice the words twice but also save him the frustration of writing the wrong letter, and attempting to erase or mark over it!

Sounding It Out – 52 Activity Cards

How It Works:

Grab and print out your cards

  • Make sure your child knows what the picture is, and then have them say the name at least 3 times. s-l-o-w-l-y, so they can really hear the letter sounds
  • Using letter tiles, have them place the correct letter in the squares to sound out their word
      1. Stamps
      2. Crayons
      3. Markers
      4. Pens – THESE are seriously the best pens in the entire world! They write smoothly, are vibrant and ERASE COMPLETELY!!
      5. Colored Pencils
      6. Letter Stickers
      7. … really the options are as endless as your imagination!Once their tiles are correct, have them permanently place the letters to form the word. There are lots of ways they can do this. I suggest mixing it up – instead of having them plug away with a pencil. (Don’t forget we are dealing with little kids! – We want this to be FUN for them!!)
