These Beginning Letter Sounds Worksheets are a perfect activity for kiddos that are eager to begin reading, but might need just a little bit more practice with letter sounds, and sounding out words!

There are about 5 basic principles that a child needs before they can begin reading. One of those requirements is knowing letter sounds. Even further than that, the ability to break apart a word to hear each individual sound. (If you are wondering about blends these Blends Flashcards are a great resource!!)

I initially made these worksheets to go along with Greyson’s preschool (at an actual preschool) work. They (the preschool, not these worksheets) focus on a single letter each week (along with a shape, color and emotion). Greyson knows his alphabet and is pretty darn good with the letter sounds. So to advance this skill I want him to start breaking apart words to identify the letters based on their sounds. Make sense?

So I made a worksheet for each letter of the alphabet. This workbook focuses on the first letter of a word – hence my super creative title Beginning Letter Sounds Worksheets. 🙂

Beginning Letter Sounds Worksheets : Tell me more!

  • Each page represents a single letter. The top left corner of the page shows which letter we will be working on.
  • Have the child identify (say) each image, and circle the ones that start with the same sound the letter makes.
  • Example- For “A” they would circle:
    • Apple
    • Alligator
    • Acorn
    • Arrow
    • Ant

The bottom half of the page is for them to practice their handwriting. Have them pick three images that start with the correct letter and they write the words on the lines.

If your little ones handwriting still needs some work, instead of having them write the three words, just have them write the letter – repeatedly! This will give them some much needed practice, and start to develop their muscle memory for the letters.
