Once your student has mastered their individual letter sounds, it is time to introduce them to blends. With these adorable Blends flashcards that are kid friendly, educational, and interactive it will make it fun! What exactly are blends? Well, blends are often referred to as constant clusters. They are groups of two or three constants in words that make a distinct sound. Such as:

  • BL, BR, CL, DR, GL, PR, SN, SP, ST, TR

The goal with these “flashcards” (They are more like instructional, or resource cards) is to just introduce the concept, and start to draw the line between the cluster sounds and real words!

Teaching Blends:

I shared my love of these 4×6 flash cards recently, so I made these the same way. Just DOWNLOAD and save them to a USB drive – you can take them right to your local drug store and have them printed for about .09 a piece!

Blends Flashcards:

Each flashcard has the blend labeled (BL, SN, TR, etc) along with 8 images that show the blend, along with the image name.

I did not make these with the intention to use them as quiz cards. I like these as the first step in the learning process, because it shows the blend “CL” along with the images. The students can see the blend at the beginning of each word, and correlate those to the pictures above.

I also think this is a great way for your little’s to practice hearing their blend sounds. They have multiple pictures to repeat on each card – helping them begin to hear the beginning blend sound!

I am excited for Greyson to be able to move on to this next step. He is so eager to start reading – but I know that it is important not to rush it. I believe that setting him up with the proper skills and basic fundamentals is the most important and crucial step I can take as a parent!

Don’t get me wrong, I also believe that it is important for kids to learn their sight words, but they also cannot just memorize the dictionary! 🙂

If you are looking for some other awesome Flash Card Resources, grab any (or all) of these FREE 4×6 flashcards, downloads!

You can also kick-start their reading with the complete Sight Word Curriculum! Trust me – you will not be disappointed!!
