Beginning Letter Sound Activity Cards

Have you ever thought about using flashcards to work on beginning letter sounds with your kids? What some people vision with flashcards (boring/sad) is not at all what these are for! These fun, little cards are meant to get kids excited about working on their beginning letter sounds. Through the use of flashcards, kids get instant feedback – immediate correction – and can see their successes right away and correct their mistakes! This makes the ability for a child to remember so much easier for them!

Last week I shared my Beginning Letter Sounds Worksheets for preschoolers. Today I am offering free Beginning Letter Sound flashcards!

Beginning Letter Sounds Activity Cards, How To Use Them:

  1. Cut out your activity cards (3 to a page) – SEE BELOW FOR A HUGE UPDATE.
  2. Have your child look at the picture and say what it is out loud.
  3. Have them select from the three-letter options which letter is the beginning sound of each word.
    1. A for Apple
    2. W for Worm
    3. B for Bird
    4. etc.
  4. They can “mark” these in any way they/you want them to! Here are a few ways I have Greyson do these:
    1. Use a clothespin to “pin” the correct letter. This also works on their motor control!
    2. Put a bunch of the cards randomly all over the floor or tabletop and have them use a counting bear. They place the bear onto the correct letter.
    3. You could laminate the cards and have them circle the letters.
    4. They can just verbally tell you the correct letter.

This is what all of the beginning letter sounds flashcards look like:

These activity cards are an excellent way for your preschooler to work on masterig their Beginning Letter Sounds! An imperative skill to learn before they begin reading.

You can also use a ring clip to corral all of these together and throw them in the car along with a clothespin. These make for an excellent activity for car trips!

UPDATE ON THE BEGINNING LETTER SOUND FLASHCARDS
After making these cards, I had my flashcard Epiphany, and have been recreating a lot of my resources, so that you can just send them to your local print center and have them printed onto 4×6 photo paper! It has been amazing. It cost less than the ink for my printer, plus I do not have to do any cutting. The paper is stronger (Read: less likely to rip / tear / crease / get ruined)! So if you would rather do this, just head over to my Flashcard page and download your Beginning letter sound Flashcard Photo Cards!!! *

Hi! You have some amazing things!! Thank you so much for sharing. When I went to download the 4 x 6 flashcards, you have the short vowel sounds for the beginning letter sounds flashcards (as well as the short vowel sounds). Any way that I could get the file for the beginning letter sounds 4 x 6 cards?
