Greyson’s room was in a desperate need of a makeover. When we bought the house his room was staged as what we believe to be a “hunting room”. There were real deer heads on the wall, complete with a hunting / wildlife themed wallpaper and border.
It was hideous!! No, space for a little boy to sleep and play in.
So last Friday, I decided to stop putting it off, and get down to business.
Here is the room…(I forgot to snap photos with all of his things in it) but it should still give you an idea of the space:
Greyson’s clothes were literally piled high in that nook. There is not closet, and we did not have a dresser since his previous home had a large closet that housed all of his clothes.
The previous homeowners left the green valance, and I just left it…. *sorry Grey, momma loves you!*
And this is all of the furniture that was stuffed in this tiny room. Some but not all will make it back into the space. Though it certainly does not look the same.
Here is a close up of the border:
To make matters even worse, the wallpaper was put directly over unpainted / untouched dry wall. Meaning if I tried to remove it, even using my new steamer I would most likely end up having to replace the drywall. No Thanks!
So after doing a lot of research, I decided I would attempt to paint over the wallpaper. Using this technique:
- Paint wallpaper with an oil based primer
- Wait for it to dry.
- Use joint compound and putty over every seam and both edges of the border
- Wait for it to dry.
- Sand the joint compound
- Primer over the whole room
- Wait for it to dry
- Then you can paint the room the color of your choice.
It actually worked REALLY REALLY well. You cannot tell that we painted over wallpaper or that there is still wallpaper there. Wahoo.
So here is what the room looked like after one coat of blue paint.
While I was waiting for all of the other steps to dry, I painted the trim a crisp and clean white. I think it makes a HUGE difference in the room!
Now we got down to the really fun stuff. Redecorating Greyson’s room!
He desperately needed a closet area. So this is what we came up with:
We added two shelves, and I hung a bathroom towel bar on the underside of the upper shelf to give me a place to hang his clothes. The baskets house, Pants, Shorts, and Socks & Shoes.
I plan on adding hooks on the left side of the upper shelf to hang all of his hats.
Here is what else we did in his room.
More shelves to break up the wall, and to give us a space to put some momentous.
Like his outfit he wore when he came home from the hospital. *sniff, sniff*
You cannot see it in this photo, but underneath the shelves there is a faux leather toy box / bench for more toy storage. In the photo above you can sneak a peek at the blue blanket resting on the bench in the lower right corner.
I made the curtains from some fabric we found at Jo Ann Fabrics, and of course armed with a 50% off coupon, they were less then $20.00
I also, wanted to display is name somewhere in the room. In a bold way. I know it is popular to put it over the crib, but his name was too long and the letters we bought were too big so that did not work. Here is what we landed on….and I have to say, I really like it!
That is the spot directly on your left as you enter the room.
And here is the changing table area, now.
Last but not least, the crib area:
The art looks a little dinky and out of proportion in the photo, but if fills up the space nicely. I do plan on getting the elephant and number art printed onto canvases, just to give it a little somethin’ somethin’
And just incase you are interested, here are some more “odd” shots of the room:
The best part of the whole thing? We did it for just over 100 bucks!!! We reused a lot of what we had already, and we had to buy it new (like the curtains and letters for his name, I used coupons) Here is the breakdown
- Curtains $18.00
- Name $14.00
- Shelves $10.00
- Brackets for shelves $16.00
- Paint: $25.00
- Spray Paint $20.00
Total: $103.00
So what have you been up to? Any little boy bedroom makeovers out there?

I really like how your room turned out. I love the frame you made with his birth information I would love to do something like that for my kids. How did you do it? stopping by from the Shine on Friday’s link party

Thank You!
I used Photoshop CS3 to create his birth information artwork. I was really pretty easy once I had the size of the text correct.

Beautiful! So many good ideas! 🙂 I especially love the idea of hanging a towel bar in the closet for clothes. I would never have thought of that but why not? 🙂
