In order for a child to begin reading, they first need to grasp letter sounds (Among many other concepts). These fun Preschool Activities: Beginning word sound cards, is a great way for your child to grasp the concept of beginning word sounds.

I created this brand new printable packet to help Greyson (And your child):

  1. Learn the sounds of individual letters
  2. Begin correlating letter sounds with words
  3. Match the BEGINNING word sound with the correct letter.

This 13 page printable covers every letter of the alphabet. Each card has a colorful image that represents a single letter.  Think: Lion, Sun, Monster, Apple, Flower, Etc.  Below the colorful photo they will see three letter options. ONE of those letters will be the letter each photo card starts with. Think: Letter “l” for Lion. Or letter “w” for worm.  The object is to get your child to hear the first letter sound of each word. By doing so they will being to understand that letter sounds correlate to specific letters AND those letters combined make up words. 🙂

The first few times Greyson did these he used a clothes pin to “clip” the correct letter. The next time he used a batman pen that when he pushes a button the pen glows the batman symbol (much like a laser pointer, but not dangerous to any eyes).

These cards are great for car rides, or while you are waiting at a restaurant. They certainly beat handing over an electronic device to keep them occupied. *Which I full admit to doing!*

Lets chat specifics:

  • These cards are formatted two to a page, for a total of 13 pages.
  • Each individual card measures 7.5 x 5 inches.
  • To assemble I simply cut them out and punched a hole in the upper left corner, attaching them all with a book ring.
  • Make sure that when you are assembling your book to shuffle the cards. If you put them in alphabetical order, your child will surely catch on. 🙂

I’ve included a glossary of the image words used!

A quick tip for you: to save you all some time and to prevent your hands from cramping up as you cut out all of your awesome printables do to NOT use scissors! To cut your time in half, and save yours hand, invest in a Rotary Cutter and a cutting mat!

Seriously! It makes it SO much easier. I just use a cheap .25 wooden ruler to follow my straight lines and in 2 seconds I have a side of both cards cut out, exactly straight!.
