Homemade baby food: it is so much easier than I initially thought. I love the variety of options I have, and how affordable it is!!

Making homemade baby food is easy, affordable, and fantastic for your little one! Not sure where to get started, though? Easy! Just follow these 5 simple steps.

I have been making homemade baby food for Hudson. I am genuinely surprised at how easy it is, and how little time it takes. More so, I love the variety of fruits and vegetables he has access to right from the get-go. (Except of course, the high allergy foods – he will not be trying those until he is a year old)

We did not have to purchase a single appliance / item to get started, since everything I use we already own. And you probably do too!!

The following items are what I use to make and store his food. You do not need the following items, but they will help you tremendously, and save you a lot of time.

Homemade Baby Food 101. Everything you need to know to get started making your own baby food at home!one / two / three / four / five

What you’ll need & how to use it:

  1.  Vegetable Steamer – You can cook or soften your  raw or frozen vegetables and firmer fruits using this. Simply put a few inches of water in a pot (so the water is just under the vegetable steamer) place the steamer in the pot, and fill with your food.  Put a cover on your pot and steam your fruits / vegetables!
    1. You will want your food to be very mushy. Mushy enough that you can mash it with a fork if need be. The older the child, the less mushy / pureed the food needs to be.
  2. Ice Cube Trays with a lid- Once you have your completed food, scoop the puree into ice cube trays, cover and freeze.
  3. Ziploc Bags – Once your puree is frozen into cubes, pop them out of the trays and toss into freezer bags. Don’t forget to label the bags! Thankfully, the ice cube sections equal an ounce or so of food. That make its much easier to know how much you are feeding your baby
  4.  Baby Spoons – You’ll need these to feed the baby. Their mouths are too small for adult size spoons – plus it helps with getting the correct amount of food into your babies mouth. You certainly do not want them to choke!
  5.   Miniature Food Processor – Once your food is done steaming / cooking – dump it into the food processor along with some of the pot water (if needed) and puree!
    1. If you do not have one of these you can use a blender – immersion blender or a potato masher!

That is all you have to do!

I really enjoy the variety of foods I am able to make him. He has already been introduced to more types of food, than Greyson was by the time he was a year old! I search Pinterest, and find all sorts of great combinations, and recipes to make him. Just the other day I made him Blueberry – Quiona – Banana oatmeal. He completely devoured it!

I also think that a basket of these tools for a mom to be would make an amazing gift! I would likely leave out the food processor (since they probably have a version of one – or at least a blender) I would spice it up a little and include these cute accessories!

Do you take each one out individually and allow it to thaw? Also how long are these generally good for while frozen?

I was wondering how long do you freeze the food for before it goes bad.
