Homemade Cloud Dough

Last week when we were on vacation in Maryland, we took Greyson to the Aquarium in Baltimore. It was fantastic. He loved it so much we actually spent the whole morning and planed on going to the Children’s Museum after lunch, but decided to go back to the Aquarium to spend more time.
Anyway, on our way out we visited the gift shop, and Greyson picked out this cool little scuba diver for bath time. In the checkout line they had a sand display for the kids to play with. It was just like Cloud Dough. Greyson loved it, so we picked up the box to see about grabbing a set for Grey. It was 2 cups and cost 25 bucks! ummmm no thanks!
During nap time today I thought it would be fun to whip up a batch of sand A.K.A cloud dough for him to play with once he woke up.
It was insanely easy to make!

Here is what you’ll need:

1. Play Sand
2. All Purpose Flour
3. Baby Oil

All you do is mix 1 cup flour, and 1 cup sand (or any equivalent ratio). Make sure they are well combined. Once you have those mixed, using your hands squish in 4 tablespoons of baby oil (or the equivalent ratio, depending on how many cups of sand:flour you used).
Then… you are done! Yep- that is all you have to do.

I set up a play area on the front porch to surprise Grey when he woke up from his nap.

I got out a handful of animals, his toolbox of alphabet cookie cutters, and of course a few cars / tractors, and his bucket of sand toys.

Greyson did a great job at making some letters and numbers.

He insisted he was making a “G” for Greyson. He was disappointed to see it was actually a “C”. I was thrilled he noticed the difference.

His absolute favorite was to use the sand toys to make animals / shapes and then use his cars to “smash” them. He is “all boy…”


This was a great afternoon activity for us. At the end of the day I put the sand back into a reusable aluminum lasagna pan, and put the top on it. It will last until Greyson ends up dumping the whole thing. But even when he does, it is so easy and inexpensive to make.
It is especially inexpensive now that summer products are all on sale. You can get a HUGE bag of play sand for a few dollars at pretty much any hardware store.
