Bath time in our house is considered the golden hour. It is a guaranteed time where both of the boys are happy and playing. Since they were both born, both Greyson and Hudson have LOVED their baths. Sometimes when the days get long (especially in the winter), one or both of them are cranky and difficult I make some quick homemade bath-paint and I let them go wild in the tub.
I love bath time because they are so darn happy – and when it is over I have two squeaky clean boys!. It is a win-win for everyone!! Over the last 5 years I have learned what are the absolute best items to have on hand for bath time – and which ones are not worth it.
Bath Time Must Haves – And What To Skip!
1) Temperature gauge!
I really think that this is the most important item to have. What feels nice and warm to me and my husband could be scalding hot to our baby. I hands down do not give my boys a bath in our tub without using the temperature spout cover. I love the 4Moms one. I was gifted it, and could not be happier. I am horrified at how warm I would make the water (before having this), and I really like that it is a live view of the temperature – so when it starts to get cold, I can adjust the faucet to keep the water at the perfect temperature!
BEFORE using the spout cover, I used the little rubber ducky that has the HOT symbol underneath it. It does not compare and turns out it is not accurate at all! They are still cute and fun for them to play with – but do not rely on the duck as a temperature gauge.
Note- I have not used this– but it looks like a nice upgrade from the other rubber ducky!
2) Cleaning Products
I am not here to tell you which specific product to buy – however, I do think it is a good idea to get an all-in-one product. I like to use the shampoo and body wash all in one. It saves me space in the bathroom, I can dump the baby product in one container of my shampoo dispenser. (Read more about why I use it here). And always ALWAYS use tear free (gentle on the eyes). The last thing you want to do is get soap in your babies eyes – not only would it hurt them but it could make them terrified of getting their hair washed.
3) Washcloths and Towels
Buy the baby washcloths. They are thinner, smaller, and easier to use to clean your little one. Adult washcloths use too much baby soap (waste of money) are are harder to use on a baby.
DO NOT BUY the baby towels. Unlike the washcloths they are TOO thin, and not absorbent enough. You will end up getting soaked because the water goes right though the towel onto you. You will also witness your baby shiver from being cold. Plus, within a few very short months they are too small to wrap up your little one. Instead use an adult sized towel and wrap them up nice and warm.
4) Bath Seats
Before the boys could sit up, I did use a bathtub seat for them. Ours cost 9.99 at wal-mart and worked great. It folded up nicely, and did not take up too much room in our smaller bathroom. I did not have or see a need to invest in a large infant bathtub when they would outgrow it so quickly.
I also skipped on the blow up bathtubs (the duck is the most recognizable). If you live in a state that has water restrictions, or droughts this might be a good investment to limit your water usage while still being able to give your little ones a bath. For us, the boys like the space of the bathtub.
5) Bath time TOYS!
Bath toys are a must. However, they do not need to be specialized toys. Things like plastic cups, a measuring cups, and some play animals would all make great bath toys. If you want some specific bath time toys here are some of our favorites:
Don’t forget the bath tub toy organizer!
So there you have it. My top picks and the items to skip when it comes to bath time. I think that a gift basket (for a baby shower) of the above items would be an amazing gift. I absolutely LOVE receiving themed gifts, and this would have just delighted my soul when I was pregnant!
