Raise your hand if you DO NOT have perfect vision! My vision is so bad, I have to throw up both hands. Do you know who does not have a hand raised? Scott doesn’t. Nope – not even one. My husband is a rare specimen with 20/20 vision. I am seriously envious.. all.the.time.
My eyes are so bad that even with my contacts in he has to read to me if there are ever any words on the television. We actually play this bizarre game when we are driving. He will say when he is able to read a sign that is up ahead, and then I shout when I am finally able to read it. It is not as much fun when we realize how long it takes before I can read the road signs AND I am driving… (No i am not actually blind, not even close.)
So today I am going to share with you how I save some serious money on eyewear!
Despite having terrible vision – I rarely actually go to the eye doctor. However, this past June I had been noticing that my vision was getting a little bit worse – and since I had not been to the eye doctors since 2010 it was time to bite the bullet and go- that and I did not have any backup contacts and they would not give me any without an eye exam.
I had been putting it off because we do not have vision coverage – and I did not want to pay a ton of money for them to tell me what I already know… I have bad vision.
Since I needed the contacts I went, and I was right that my eyes had gotten a little bit worse after having the boys. I ordered a 3 month supply of two-week disposable contacts (I stretch them out a lot longer than two weeks… more like a year!) I am able to do this by:
- Changing my contact solution every day. When I was younger an eye doctor told me that NOT changing your solution everyday was like reusing the toothpaste from the previous evening. It has just stuck with me, and I always change out my solution.
- Rinsing out my contact lens case every morning and letting it air dry
- At least once a month I put my case through the dishwasher to sanitize it
- I always wash my hands before removing or inserting my contacts
The eye doctor got talking to me, and asked if I needed new eye glasses / lenses. I desperately do. My glasses are from high school!!! The lenses are so scratched, it is embarrassing, not to mention the lenses are so weak that they make little to no difference.
I have put off buying new glasses because 1) I do not wear them often. Really only at night when I am tired, and want to get my contacts out. I usually just end up “suffering” and keeping my contacts in so I can see. and 2) they are really pricey. – I hate to spend a ton of money on something I do not use often.
So I told him I did need new glasses and I went to check out what they had. The least expensive glasses they had for purchase still cost $99.00 PLUS the cost of the new lenses. Umm… thanks but not thanks. I left the office with just my contacts. (not to mention they were hideous!)
Enter my saving (and yours!) grace. GlassesUSA.com !!! Here is the deal:
GlassesUSA.com offers these really great glasses (just like my eye doctor had in his office) for a fraction of the price. Right now you can get a complete pair including lenses for $48.00 BEFORE you snag a coupon / discount! $48 is more in the ballpark of my budget for glasses.
However, if this is your first time at GlassesUSA.com, if you register you will get 50% off your first purchase. Now that $48.00 is down to less than $25.00!
At first I was worried about picking the wrong frames but they even have the option to upload a photo of yourself and change out the frames (It is called their Virtual Mirror) – to see how they look on your face! #problemsolved
So, if you are in the market for some new glasses OR if you are like me and have put off an important purchase for way-way-way too long make sure you checkout GlassesUSA.com.

How have you been getting contacts, if you have not had an exam in 5 yrs? What I can gleen from your story is that you bought contacts back then and have stretched them out for 5 yrs.

You are right. It had not been quite 5 years but I did extend a 6 month supply of contacts into almost 5 years!
