Sight Words – Memory Cards

Greyson and I have been working along on his first 40 sight words. I shared with you my complete Pre-Primer Sight Word Curriculum – but I also wanted to create and offer a free resource for everyone!

The one thing that I have learned is that the absolute best way to get Greyson to know his sight words is through exposure. Having the words constantly around him, makes all the difference! To go along with curriculum I made  these memory cards and printed them onto colored cardstock.

sight word memory cards! The best way to teach a child their sight words is through exposure! This blog has some great tips and resources!!

Each page has 4 sight words on it – for a total of 10 pages (All 40 Pre-Primer sight words). I chose 10 different pieces of colored cardstock and ran them through my printer.

In order to make the cutting of the memory cards a little easier and faster I like to use my cutting mat, guide (you can just use a ruler) ,and rotary cutter. It only took me about 5 minutes or less to cut all of the cards out – and they are all even, which is awesome!

We work on four words at a time. I have them displayed on the front of our refrigerator. I ask Greyson to tell me the words all.day.long. I will rearrange the words so he is not memorizing the word order.

Once he masters a word it gets hole punched and put on a ring clip. I add a new word to the refrigerator BUT will still refer to the ring clip so he is always telling me his sight words – daily!

Another tip- At bedtime (or whenever we are reading) if I come upon a sight word I will point to it and ask him what the word is. IF it seems to be frustrating him because he just wants to hear the story, I will finish the story and then go back to the beginning and point to the words. He thinks it is great because he gets more one-on-one time with me, when he should be sleeping.
