Greyson has been asking me how to spell words a lot. He is showing an intense interest in exploring words – how they are formed – how letters are combined to make words, etc. So, to help / encourage him I made this really cute introduction to spelling packet! It is a great introduction to help kids wrap their heads around spelling, in addition to a fantastic letter writing activity!

For the past two weeks or so Greyson has been obsessed with pointing out every letter he sees on signs, the television, magazines, etc. He then informs me what word it is. Our conversations tend to go a lot like this lately:
Greyson- G-R-O-C-E-R-Y, that word is chair.Me- Great job with your letters, buddy. But, that actually spells grocery.Greyson- Nope.
Yep, that is my life right now.
Last week, however, he learned to spell and recognize his name. He was so proud of himself, and so were Scott and I. That night as I was reading to him, he told me he wanted to be able to know the words.
I quickly created this little printable as a fun activity for us to do together. They are not sight words, this is not something that he will learn to read from. This is simply intended to keep him interested in spelling, and recognizing words versus single letters
I am currently working on a packet to introduce more words, sight words, and stringing words together.
Learning to spell:
In this packet you’ll receive
- 14 colorful images. NONE of the images names are more than 4 letters.
-
3 pages of letters to print and cut out. Intended to be used to match up the letters to form the words
Once the child spells the word correctly, have them follow the line to the right of the image to the SAME word.
If you follow me on Instagram, I will be posting a photo of the adorable wooden & foam letters I made for these cards.
Another wonderful tool that you can use to build this concept are the Melissa and Doug: See and Spell puzzles. Greyson’s Grandma just purchased these today as a Christmas present for Greyson. I have used them before, and am very excited for Greyson to have his own set of these puzzles.
Make sure you check back tomorrow for an add on to this packet!
