In previous posts I have mentioned what we are doing in regards to Greyson’s education this year. If you are new around here the fast version is: We are holding off on sending him to Kindergarten since he does not turn 5 until Halloween. This has been a debate between my Husband and I for years…. Long story short I did NOT want to send him, and my husband did.
I do not feel like I “won” this one – but I do feel a huge since of relief knowing he has another year before we send him off to school. There are so many reasons I did not want to send him this year that it could be its own post… and maybe it will. However, his intelligence is not really among them. He is smart – and not in the sense that all parents think their child is a genius. I know he is not a genius but in many areas he is advanced – and he LOVES to learn… and he picks up new things very quickly.
Even though he is not going to Kindergarten this year he is still in school. Sort-of. He is attending a Co-Op where I teach every 3rd week, he is also attending a preschool at the Zoo — because it is just awesome and he gets to interact with animals… I will admit I am a little jealous.
This past Thursday I took my turn teaching the boys. It was a huge wake-up call to me, and I am so grateful for it. I did a B is for Butterfly unit- where the boys worked on the following skills:
- Letter B Sounds
- Beginning Letter sound (B) words
- Letter Identification
- Graphing and analysis
- Fine motor skills
- Following Directions
They did great and really had fun. However, I realized that I need to make some serious changes. I have been focusing WAY too much on letters – Math and handwriting work. I do not plan on having them (Greyson) stop working on these skills I am just going to start taking a new approach.
I need to and really want to start introducing new ideas / concepts / information to Greyson. Things like:
- Animal Classification
- Human Body Functions
- Land forms
In the past I would work on animal names (Lion – Tiger – Snake – Crab) and ask for the beginning letter sound – group them, graph them, etc. I want to do that BUT add more. A lot more. I know the boys can handle it, and I really believe they would enjoy it! I want to add information about the life-cycle of a butterfly – why they are important to our environment.
I am excited to work on growing their vocabulary! I will be using this incredible thesaurus to help out!
So all this is to say that there will be some changes around here. Good changes. No. Great changes! I will be sharing more comprehensive units. Topics you may not have thought about teaching to your preschooler / kindergartner – but would love it. I will still be incorporating the important age appropriate skills – they will just be centered around new ideas and information to help grow their minds!
I hope you are as excited as I am! AND I would LOVE if you guys would leave me some comments to let me know what you’d like to see!
