Greyson started Kindergarten this past Tuesday. It has been a HUGE change for us … our schedules have been tossed into the air. He has to be at school at 7:35 every morning. Knowing this I spent the entire summer getting our home ready for this transition. Everything from organizing – purging – new school clothing – and most importantly creating healthy habits!
Knowing how early we have to be up, ready, and out of the house I knew we needed to get a healthy routine in order BEFORE school started. So a few of the things I did and are currently doing to get the whole family ready:
Sleep.Sleep.Sleep!
Greyson has to be up at 6:30 which is between 30 minutes to and hour earlier than he has been accustom to. So we have a strict bedtime of 7:00 pm. He starts brushing his teeth at 6:50 – flosses, mouthwash, and potty. At 7:00 we head upstairs and read a bedtime story. Then he goes to sleep. He needs the sleep to help keep him healthy, and focused during the day.
Nutrition!
I am far from health nut, but it is really important to me that I am fueling my children’s bodies with nutrition everyday. I am all for treats, as long as they have filled up with the necessary vitamins throughout the day.
H0w do I do it now that he is in school?
In the mornings I like to feed Greyson a hot breakfast! I feel like it just “Sticks to his ribs” better throughout the morning than cereal does. I also notice that when he is given cereal in the mornings he is asking for a snack a lot sooner than when I make him eggs and an English muffin!
Pack a lunch- I am packing Greyson’s lunch everyday. This way I not only get to see how much he ate – but also I can pack the foods I know he will enjoy, and fill up on! Having a dedicated drawer / cupboard just for school lunches makes this a breeze!
Vitamins! Even with my best intentions and attempts neither of my boys fill up with the proper amount of vitamins and minerals everyday on their own. So I supplement! When Greyson comes home from school I do my best to have a healthy snack waiting for him, along with his Nature Made® KIDS FIRST® Multivitamin Gummies.
When we started to think about back to school shopping these were on the top of our list! I have done a ton of research about kid gummies, and the Nature Made® KIDS FIRST® Multivitamin Gummies topped my list. They were at the top for a few simple (but very important) reasons. 1) They are preservative and yeast free. 2) They contain 12 essential nutrients geared toward children his age 3) No synthetic dyes and all natural flavors! They are also gluten free for those children who require it!
We headed to target to grab them (Seriously, where else would I go … it is my favorite store in the whole world after-all!) I let Greyson make the final decision on the flavor combos that he wanted.
I love that he takes his decisions seriously – anything from his multivitamin gummies to the toys he takes on road trips! He ended up choosing Orange – Cherry – Mixed Berry, Daily Nutritional Support – and really does love how they taste.
I was really pleasantly surprised at how many “options” they had available at Target. They had more specific gummies, than any other brand on the Target shelf, plus they were very reasonably priced!
In addition to the gummies, and nutritional food we make sure that he showers every night before bed, as well as lots of hand washing. I know that germs help his immune system (to an extent) but I also know that flu season is approaching rather quickly, and we want to avoid all head colds and stomach viruses, the best as we can!
