Learning / teaching short vowel sounds is not an easy concept for littles (or you)! When trying to teach a child how to “sound-it-out” the English language, does not make it easy for them!
Learning short vowel sounds, is a major factor in their ability to becoming a master reader. Greyson struggled with this for a while. He was really having a hard time sounding out words, because he had a hard time knowing what vowel sound it should be (Short Vowel Sound, or Long Vowel Sound)
So, I got to work, and made a few activities for him. Working through these, along with the reference sticks – he has them down! Easy, peasy.

Short Vowel Sounds: What Are They?
There are two types of vowel sounds. The easy way to remember the differences.
Short Vowel Sound – The vowel makes a sound. Example: Apple, Elephant, Igloo, Octopus, Umbrella
Long Vowel Sound – The vowel makes the sound of the actual letter. Example: Ape, East, Ice Cream, Open, UFO
So for kids, in the beginning they have to learn both ways of how the vowel can sound. Then they have to start learning how to know what vowel sound to use (That will come later).
